St John’s Weekly Bulletin – Sunday 27 May 2018

St John’s Weekly Bulletin – Sunday 27 May 2018

This weekend we will celebrate Trinity Sunday, a time when Christians remember the three persons of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We choose this weekend to celebrate the Trinity, straight after Pentecost (when we remember the Holy Spirit first coming to Jesus’ friends) because it is through the outpouring of the Spirit that the church came to know the three persons of God, and developed a way of talking about and affirming our faith that we continue to this day in the creeds we say together on Sunday. Even though the trinity can be a challenging idea, Trinity Sunday is a time for us to remember the awesomeness of God and the unique and incredible ways that God works in our lives when we have been ‘born of the Spirit’. As Jesus’ powerful words to Nicodemus in John’s Gospel this week tell us ‘The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.’

Even though the word ‘Trinity’ isn’t found in the bible, we see again and again in the bible that God is known to us in a special way – as Father, as Son and as Holy Spirit. The trinity offers us a way of talking about this relationship; as loved by the Father, as redeemed by the Son and as guided by the Holy Spirit. It is a reminder that we are on an incredible journey as followers of Jesus; to better know the God who is from the beginning (John 1:1), who reveals himself through the Son (Matt. 11:27) and who has sent the Holy Spirit as a guide and advocate for us here on earth (John 16:13).

As we come together this weekend to worship God together we have an opportunity to rejoice in the deepening of our knowledge and love of a God who sends us into the world, by being together, by listening to His word and by offering our prayers to Him. This might be an excellent time to consider how your own relationship can be deepend and might flourish – perhaps by starting or joining a bible study here at St John’s or by learning more about faith by coming aloing to the film screening next Wednesday night at Event cinema’s or by speaking about faith with others over coffee or a meal in the weeks to come. But above all, Trinity Sunday reminds us that we worship an awesome God who loves us and who calls us, so that like Isaiah we might say “Here I am Lord; send me.”

All blessings for the week to come,

Mark

An unflinching documentary: ‘For the Love of God’

The Bible society is partnering with The Centre for Public Christianity in the release of their new film documentary called “For the Love of God”. The Newcastle screening will be held at Tower Cinemas 7pm on Wednesday 30 May 2018.

This film has been made so it can be a tool for church outreach and also as an in-church equipping and encouraging event. At the Newcastle screening, the film-makers will be conducting a Q & A session after the film, so bring your questions, and your non-Christian friends who might have questions about the history of the church – the good AND the bad!

The tickets need to be purchased on-line before the event.

Flowers in Church

This year, we have had flowers in church for weddings and special occasions only. A good example of this is the beautiful floral arrangement you will see in Church this Sunday, commemorating Trinity Sunday. If you would like to commemorate a special date or a special person by donating a display of flowers to the church, please let Jennifer Benson know on 02 4952 6279.

St John’s Weekly Bulletin – Sunday 17 December 2017

Last Wednesday was the last session of the St John's Playgroup for 2018. It was a great time to enjoy the sunshine, do some finishing-off-the-year tasks, and to celebrate together. I was able to read some Christmas stories to the kids, which was lots of fun.

As I talked to some of the parents there, it was wonderful to hear how our Playgroup is a real blessing in the Newcastle community. It's obviously a real place of welcome - a glorious multicultural mix of people from all around the world playing and sharing together. One of the mums told me how valuable the Playgroup community is to her, with her children's grandparents on the other side of the world, and how our Playgroup leaders are such an important and loved part of her children's lives.

Please pray for our Playgroup. Please ask God to bless the leaders, Ruth, Elizabeth, Jenny and (another) Ruth. They are real signs of God's love here in the community of Newcastle. Playgroup is planned to resume on Wednesday 7 February 2018. If you are interested in being part of playgroup leadership for 2018, please contact Ruth on 0439 627 723!

Blessings, Murray

Funeral of Judy Hughes

I need to share with members of St John's the sad news that Judy Hughes died on Tuesday afternoon after a battle with cancer.

Judy was a much-loved member of our church – a woman of faith, hope and joy. Judy's funeral will be in the church on Monday 18 December at 10.30am. It will be a time to honour Judy's memory and renew our faith and trust in our Saviour Jesus Christ who was born, died and rose again to save us all.

The flowers in the Sanctuary on Sunday are given by the Women’s Guild in Judy's memory, "a much loved and valued member of the Guild"

Tea & Thread

‘tea&thread’ is refugee portrait book edited by a member of St John's! It is now available from Anglican Aid in Sydney – all profits going to support relief projects in the Middle East. It’s a hard subject, but a thoughtfully done and beautiful book, and would make a great Christmas gift.

Advent candles

The four purple Advent Candles have symbolism attached to them, the candle for the 1st Sunday in Advent is often called the “Prophecy Candle” in remembrance of the prophets, primarily Isaiah who foretold the birth of Christ.

Last Sunday’s candle on the 2nd Sunday in Advent represents love and is often called the “Bethlehem Candle” symbolizing Christ’s manger. It was lit in memory of Amy Margaret Benson aged 6 years.

We are nearly at the end of Advent and preparing to once again celebrate the birth of Jesus. This Sunday’s candle, the 3rd in Advent, is often called the “Shepherds Candle and it represent Joy. It is given in memory of James Barrington Benson aged 3 years.

Welcome to using Elvanto

Thanks for signing up to use our account on the Elvanto system. We are primarily using this service to help manage the rostering of the wonderful volunteers who work together to make our services run smoothly.

We're currently using a service setup that is based on what week of the month you are rostered to do things, but that's been under a bit of strain with people moving away, people joining the rosters, people moving between services, and people not remembering when they are on to do things! :)

This system should allow us more flexibility, by not relying on us having 4, or 8 sets of volunteers to do things and having to have extra people to cope with 5th Sundays, as we do at the moment. One of the powerful things is the ability to let the church know when you will be away and for us to schedule volunteers around this.

To let us know when you are away and won't be available on the roster, please follow these steps:

  1. Login to Elvanto using your username & password
  2. Click Availability
  3. Fill out the "I am unavailable from" dates
  4. Fill out the reason (optional, but please put some notes there if you have arranged to swap with someone. That will be less needed as we use this system more.)
  5. Click the green "Submit my unavailability button"

Please let me know how you get on with this. If you have any problems, don't hesitate to get in contact. I'm hoping to make this a success and will be very willing to help you work through anything that you don't understand.

Blessings,

Murray

Adding Songs

hey Murray,

How do we add songs to this account? or is that something that is an admin only activity?

Cheers.
